Stone Barrington is one of the great fictional heroes of modern thrillerdom. Handsome, very rich, a former homicide cop turned successful lawyer, accomplished in a range of skills from shooting a gun to flying his own plane (in this volume of the series he takes delivery of a new private jet), suavely at home in the most rarified heights of New York society, a habitué of the Four Seasons and other elite restaurants, drinker of only the finest whiskies and wines, a sex magnet who effortlessly beds one beautiful and compliant woman after another – he is a fantasist’s dream, and it is tremendous fun to follow his exploits through one volume after another of Stuart Woods’ reliably entertaining series. In this installment of the Barrington saga, Stone is hired to do a routine bit of legal work: a San Antonio brewer wants to open a distributorship in New York; Stone handles the paperwork and provides good advice. Unfortunately, this steps on the toes of an old-style mobster who resents the competition. Soon Stone and his client are targets for unfriendly persuasion, or worse. Stone gets help from Dino Bacchetti, his oldest friend and former homicide squad partner, recently appointed New York’s police commissioner; but the circle of thuggish revenge widens, and soon Dino is a target too. Through chases and ambushes, robberies and set-ups, it all gets sorted out with Stone and Dino left standing once again after the mayhem dies down. And naturally, in the midst of all this Stone finds time for some excellent meals and plenty of pneumatic female companionship. The many fans of Stone Barrington will have been waiting impatiently for this latest book in the series. Here it is, well worth the wait. Readers new to the series could jump in with this volume and fill in the back story. Once you’ve read a thriller by Stuart Woods, you’ll want to read them all.
