The Spellman Files began as a screenplay, but the more Lisa Lutz wrote, the more she realized she needed adequate space to tell the story of Isobel Spellman and her endearingly eccentric family of private investigators. The resulting novel, filled with page after page of Lutz’s “whip-smart sass” (People), was nominated for three Mystery awards for best first novel/best first mystery: the Anthony Award, the Barry Award, and the Macavity Award. A Southern Californian by birth, Lutz wrote The Curse of the Spellmans in Seattle, but now resides in San Francisco, where she’s promised her family she’ll stay—at least for the time being.
