School bells toll a mournful death knell in New York Times bestselling author Tess Gerritsen’s new edge-of-your-seat thrill ride, Last to Die. But medical examiner Maura Isles is unaware of the impending danger when she arrives at Evensong, an exclusive boarding school situated deep in the Maine wilderness. Maura is there to visit Julian “Rat” Perkins, the 16-year-old boy with whom she suffered a terrible ordeal, and she’s somewhat startled to learn that, like Julian, all the students there are survivors of violence. That could explain why the main courses of study involve advanced training in science and investigative skills, all geared for careers in crime fighting. Could there be a better place for Detective Jane Rizzoli to hide Teddy Clock? The young boy barely escaped the shockingly brutal slaughter of his foster family, and Jane fears the killers are looking for a chance to take him out as well. What Rizzoli and Isles don’t know is that the key to the murders resides behind the locked gates of the one place that should be a safe haven for all, especially kids. Will the friends awaken to the gathering threat in time…or will one of them become the last to die?

I just read Last to Die over a two day period. I just love the relationship between Jane and Maura. Lots of twists and turns in plot. Good to the last page!

Last to Die was fast moving and kept my interest. I've been reading this series for years, but this book would make a stand-a-lone book for new readers. I couldn't put this one down. A big plus was the realistic relationships among the adults, and the kids. It is obvious Ms Gerritsen has been around teens because she knows exactly how to write them. One of the best books I've read in 2012.
