The tranquil façade of posh Hexam Place masks the silent tension between London’s well-to-do families and their long-suffering servants. One of the latter—June, the housekeeper to a foreign princess—has established the St. Zita Society to render mutual support when the upper class grows simply too insufferable. But the stress has already driven Dex, the gardener, 'round the bend.
While Henry, Lord Studley’s studly valet, romances the lord’s wife and daughter, Preston Still has his own wife’s lover, movie star Rad Sothern, cornered. Meanwhile, Dex hears a voice in his head or, more precisely, his cell phone. The voice has an urgent mission for Dex—a deadly one.
Ruth Rendell blends humor and suspense in this delightful departure.

I adore her works, whether as Ruth Rendell or Barbara Vine; but, the St. Zita society, not so much. The book ended but the story didn't. It was not developed in characters or plot as I have come to expect. I will buy her books, again, but this is the one I could have missed without missing it.
