Hiss of Death

With Hiss of Death, beloved authors Rita Mae Brown and her feline co-conspirator, Sneaky Pie Brown, sow the seeds of an all-new mystery featuring Mary Minor “Harry” Haristeen, sleuthing cats Mrs. Murphy and Pewter and that incorrigible corgi, Tee Tucker. This time around, the onset of spring ushers in more than hay fever as the animal friends come to the aid of an ailing Harry to sniff out the season’s first blossom of murder.

Spring is sweeping over Crozet, Virginia, and as the days lengthen, people’s spirits lift with a wave of tilling and planting. Harry is especially excited: This year is her first harvesting grapes to sell. But then a health crisis sends her reeling into the forbidding world of hospitals and doctors, treatments and procedures.

Surviving this journey will be tough, but Mrs. Murphy, Pewter and Tucker will do their best to steer Harry through it—as will her ever-helpful husband, Fair. Others will have worse luck: A promising nurse’s lifeless body is discovered without a mark on her. Then another hospital employee, who seemed in perfect health, is also found dead. It’s clear there’s a mystery afoot—and that’s one thing Harry and her menagerie can’t keep their noses out of.

Waste of time! One star too many! No star rating deserved!

HISS OF DEATH by Rita Mae Brown -- Waste of time! One star too many! No star rating deserved! NOT a cozy cat/dog mystery! Very, very little of Mrs. Murphy, Tucker & Pewter!!! Don't waste your time! Just another SOCIAL SOAP BOX for one of her pet issues!!! That's the BIG DISAPPOINTMENT--like "Purrfect Murder", "Cat of The Century" and other recent so-called Mrs. Murphy Mysteries! The books have practically NO activity and conversation by the cats and dog!!! I read a few pages and was DISGUSTED!!! Then I only scanned the rest as fast as possible---the book is another waste of time for readers who want to be entertained by a "cozy cat and dog mystery"!!!!! Don't bother unless you want to be bored and preached to! She should reserve PROSELYTIZING on her pet(pardon the pun) issues in NON-cozy Mrs. Murphy mysteries--regular fiction (without animals) or non-fiction on the issue she wants to spew about!!! This book is as BAD as the previous several NON "Mrs. Murphy" mysteries---very little of the animals and ranting on and on promoting the socio/political issue of the book!!! SHAME on R.M.Brown for RUINING what started out as a very entertaining cat/dog mystery series!!! If you want a good read go back to the early 1990's and read the first half dozen or so "Mrs. Murphy" mysteries!!! After that she started having less and less of the cats and Tucker in each book!!! This century she has lost it entirely!!! Now these once "cozy cat" mysteries are nothing but proselytizing SOAP BOXES she uses to preach her propaganda; pro-Democratic, pro-homosexual, and now breast cancer charities. Those belong in other types of books--nonfiction!!! I am sick and tired of being PREACHED to by Rita Mae Brown in her stilted left wing liberal NON-cozy, NON-cat/dog, NON-mysteries!!! She has RUINED the series by using it as a soapbox to preach her views from--just plain DISGUSTING!!!

Familiar characters in unfamiliar territory

I love this series, but this one is a bit of a departure from the farm and horse setting. While I share the author's Views and hopes for the future of cancer treatment, this seemed a somewhat awkward platform for them. I hope the next book keeps more to the interplay of the well-beloved characters and does not treat them as a backdrop to another agenda.
