Blacksmith Meg Langslow returns in this hilarious caper from Donna Andrews. A cloud hangs over the Caerphilly Days festival: Caerphilly’s finances are in such distress that the Virginia town has had to mortgage its own jail. As a predatory lender lurks in the town’s shadows, town clerk Phineas K. Throckmorton has spent the past year barricaded in the courthouse basement.
The little conundrum of how Throckmorton keeps himself supplied with food soon takes on much larger import when one of the loan company’s employees is found murdered! Could Throckmorton somehow have committed the crime? If not him, who? Does it have to do with a little tidbit of information that the loan company wants to hide? And can Meg hammer out a solution?

After reading good reviews of other books in this author's series, I decided to give it a try. Other authors claimed the series was "zany & funny" on the jacket cover, so I was looking forward to a cute, fun story. However, if there was any hilarity in this story, I missed it...the townsfolk are weird more than amusing, and the mystery was slowly paced, so there was very little tension. The end was not entirely surprising, but not overly obvious either. Not my favorite!
