Away at boarding school, Adèle has received a threatening note and fears for her life, so the plainly dressed Jane endures a harrowing solo journey to London. Arriving at the school, Jane discovers that Adèle’s roommate has died mysteriously—and no one will allow Jane to see Adèle. Undaunted, Jane goes undercover as a teacher and sets out to find the culprit.

Jane Eyre returns to life in this mystery, which takes place after she has married Mr. Rochester and given birth to a son. Rochester's ward, at school in London, sends a strange letter that turns out actually to have been written by the headmistress, who pens letters for all the girls to control what is said to outsiders. When Jane gets to the school, a student is dead, and the Bobbies (a new development at the time) realize she has been murdered. Jane becomes involved in the investigation, eventually naming the guilty party, even though no one blames the woman when they find out how the dead girl had treated her. An enjoyable book. Unfortunately, the copy editor apparently is unaware that "viable excuse" is an anachronism.
