Princeton, New Jersey, at the turn of the 20th century is a tranquil place, but something dark is lurking at the edges of town, corrupting and infecting its residents. A powerful curse besets the elite families of Princeton and a young bride is abducted by a dangerously compelling man—who may just be the devil and who spreads his curse upon a richly deserving community of privilege. And in the Pine Barrens that border the town, a lush and terrifying underworld opens up.
An utterly fresh work from Joyce Carol Oates, The Accursed marks new territory for the masterful writer. Narrated with her unmistakable psychological insight, it combines beautifully transporting historical detail with chilling supernatural elements to stunning effect.

I found this book extremely involving. I picked it up every chance I had to read. As usual, Joyce Carol Oates has written an extraordinary and involving story

It is indeed rare that I pick up a book that I cannot finish. This is one such time. I've slogged along thru the first 150 or so pages (only for lack of other reading material on hand) and simply cannot force another line. The style of writing is so deliberately 19th century and the subject matter bounces so radically that I get lost in the verbage rather than the story line. This one gets donated to the public library....
