Parker is becoming SSDD
September 09, 2008

I have been reading Parker religiously since The Godwulf Manuscript. This will probably be my last foray into the world of Spenser. The vignettes into life of RBP lived large in Spenser have gone from invigorating to lukewarm to tedious. Spenser has become his Spring Collection hero. Plotting, which was always a bit thin has now become the consistency of gossamer. I can think of 3 chapters which could have been left out and not affected the book at all. How on earth Spenser put all this together in just the last 20 or so pages strains any credibility. Time to put Spenser to rest; by Parker's own reckoning Spenser has to be nearing 70 anyway!

Liked It

Have read all the Spenser novels and have liked them all. Could have done w/o Susan's mention of Harvard so often and the frequent references to the problem they had 20 years ago. It would be nice if once she would actually eat instead of pick at her food. Still I enjoyed this book. I'm a Spenser fan.

I liked it

I liked this particular Spencer mystery. There is lots of sarcasm, perceptiveness, and great dialogue. I agree that Susan does get on one's nerves at times. I am overweight, less than svelte, and not a PhD, so her perfection is annoying at times. But still she;s a good foil for Spencer's personality. Hawk, Vinnie, and the crew of "helpers" are well done. Parker always punches holes in the egos of obnoxious people, so that's fun.

A Little Less Susan Adulation
March 14, 2008

As usual, I really liked this RPB book. However, I would definitely appreciate a little less Susan adulation. I really am getting a little tired of hearing how gorgeous she is, how intelligent she is, how little she eats...if you ask me, she sounds a little vain and very anorexic. Still, all in all, I love the Spenser series, and I love the books where all the guys (Vinnie, Teddy Sapp, Hawk, Chollo, etc.) come together to help Spenser out. I especially love the sarcastic repartee, which has me laughing out loud sometimes while reading. Worth the money.
