With Midnight Fugue, author Reginald Hill plumps Yorkshire copper Andy Dalziel into a complicated case that will shake him out of his post-convalescent funk. It starts when a woman named Gina asks Dalziel to find her husband, missing these seven years. Alex Wolfe was a Detective Inspector under strain after the death of their young daughter and under suspicion when a case he was working developed serious leaks. Is he in fugue? In flight? Or was he simply removed thanks to the machinations of his suspect, Goldie Gidman—a city financier who is himself under the scrutiny of a left-wing tabloid journalist? While Dalziel hunts clues in London’s East End, up in Yorkshire Gina is being shadowed by two ruthless associates from Gidman’s past.

I am a Dalziel/Pascoe fan ... have read most of the series. This one was superb. My husband is reading it now and thinks it is the best of all.

I am an avid fan of Reginald Hill. He, along with Robert Goddard, is my favorite author. I've read all 23 of Hill's Dalziel/Pascoe mysteries. This last one is somewhat disappointing. The story was boring. Very little time was spent on the main and secondary characters. Hill's great wit was missing. The writing style was not like the other 23 mysteries. These are the things that made Hill the best British mystery writer ever. Unfortunately, they were absent in Midnight Fugue. Hope they all return next time!
