Cat of the Century

Rita Mae Brown and her feline partner, Sneaky Pie Brown, are back with Cat of the Century, a new mystery starring Mary Minor “Harry” Haristeen, sleuthing cats Mrs. Murphy and Pewter and corgi Tee Tucker.

Harry’s beloved and tart-tongued Aunt Tally is about to turn the big 1-0-0. The alumnae association of her alma mater sees an opportunity to honor the centennial and cash in on it as well. A big fund-raiser in Aunt Tally’s honor may recoup some of the school revenue lost in the tanking economy. But soon there’s more at risk than investments and endowments.

When board member Mariah D’Angelo vanishes without a trace, questions about a suspicious transaction in the association’s account send Harry, Aunt Tally and her best friend, Inez—not to mention the inquisitive pets—sniffing around. What’s behind the disappearance? Was it Mariah’s donations to crafty politicians and crooked charities? Her rivalry with fellow board member Flo Langston? And is there a connection to the 40-year-old unsolved death of an old acquaintance of Aunt Tally’s? Using animal cunning and human canniness, Harry and her menagerie must dig out the answers or, even at 100 years old, Aunt Tally may outlive them all!

Too much political talk
June 18, 2010

I've always enjoyed the books in this series, but this one is a major disappointment. If I wanted political lectures I would go back to college or attend the nearest Tea Party event. I agree with what others have said: too little input to the storyline from the animals, too many new characters for continuity and the plot line is thin. The book was well researched, I'll give the author that, but that's about all it has going for it. Will have to think long and hard about buying the next book, if this is going to be trend.

Disappointed
June 09, 2010

I was so looking forward to reading this book. I felt like I was listening to a lecture. I read to be entertained, this was not entertainment. I also missed some of the characters from previous books. This may be the last book that I will buy in this series.

Borrrrrring!!!!

I totally agree with the other reviews. If Ms. Brown needs to lecture us all on moral, economic, political and social issues, maybe she should run for office!! When I first started reading this series, I was delighted. Now we're down to possibly my last Rita Mae Brown read! Does she ever read these reviews???? She should.

Totally agree with the others
May 26, 2010

Gave it two stars because it was well written and researched, but absolutely agree that it felt like I was back in college listening to a political lecture and that there was far too little animal interaction. Besides, I figured out "who done it" early on, so there wasn't any excitement in finishing the book. I'm still looking forward to the next book in the series. Hopefully Rita Mae and Sneaky Pie will revert to the formula that has kept their many fans happy all these years.

Below usual standard.
May 20, 2010

Just finished the latest two Rita Mae/Sneaky Pie books and the difference is night and day. Santa Clawed followed typical form with the usual Mrs. Murphy and her cohorts' involvement. Not so with Cat of the Century. Far less animal action and much more author opinion. Not what I really read the Browns' fiction for.
