Scottish writer Josephine Tey has come to Cornwall to spend a peaceful summer at the family estate of her friend, Inspector Archie Penrose. Her zeal for playwriting dampened by real-life tragedy, she hopes the sea air will refresh her enough to begin work on her second crime novel.
Alas, her hopes are dashed when her arrival coincides with the funeral of a young estate worker who recently drowned in a nearby lake. Soon after, another young man disappears and when the local curate falls from the cliffs behind an open-air theatre, Josephine and Archie suspect cold-blooded murder.
As stylish and unsettling as a tale by her protagonist, Nicola Upson’s Angel with Two Faces exposes an evil with a shining facade—and a far darker heart.

The premise starts out to be fascinating but the final third of the book goes over the top in believability. There is too much talk and too little action in untangling an over-complicated plot. I liked the Josephine Tey character but not the way this was finally resolved.
