Weaving graceful prose and incisive character studies into a thrilling plot, James Lee Burke begins The Glass Rainbow with Det. Dave Robicheaux bailing his ex-partner Clete Purcel out of jail. Over the past few years, the bodies of seven young women had been found in ditches and swamps around New Orleans, and Clete was grilling a prime suspect—a big-time pimp and meth dealer—when he saw red and assaulted the man.
Clete’s explosion brings his demons into Dave’s life in a personal way. The pimp had ties to the St. Jude Project, a charity aimed at getting young women off the streets. Soon Dave finds that its main sponsor is the scion of a wealthy family—a smooth-talker whose motives Dave mistrusts…and who's currently dating his daughter.

As I have always said about Mr. Burke -- "he paints with words." I haven't read one of his books that I didn't like although the Dave Robicheaux series are my favorite! He is a mastery of the English language and a "painter of the mind!" Love your work sir and it deserves more than 5 stars!

He never disappoints. Good book, good story, well written

I have read all of James Lee Burke's books in the Dave Robicheaux series. I was very disappointed in this one. It took forever to get to the story itself. I do love words and prose but when they detract from telling the tale, they don't add value. When I finished this book, I sent it to the recycle bin. I've only done that with 2 other books in my life.

So well-written, with some beautiful prose and rockin' full-bodied characters and dialogue, The Glass Rainbow was a frustrating read for me. I want the story to move with suspense building in every chapter ending with a definitive understanding of who did what and why. Burke draws this story out and writes with nuances, allusions and sarcasm that I ultimately found to be confusing. I'm rating this book as a mystery, not as a straight novel. As another reviewer implied, if you read The Glass Rainbow for the skilled and poetic use of language, the characters, and the dialogue first, putting the mystery second as an integral part of the whole, pleasure and appreciation for the experience would be greater. I would read Burke again, anxious to revisit the characters, but I would approach his books with a much different expectation.

This was the best book he has written. Could not put it down and now I hate that it is over.
Waiting for his next book with open arms.
