This book took a little more time to read, the plot was interesting, but I had to stay with it a long time to get thru a history lesson first which was just annoying in the entire book. The tale could of been told easier and without all that back and forth between present and past. This is not a fast read book. All in all it could of been better.

Louis Bayard avoids mediocrity in this rendition of love, murder, hidden treasures, alchemy and paranormal experiences. Not only does the reader get a history lesson on the life, times and plethora of scientific discoveries of Thomas Herriot (a name previously unknown to me) the author also manages to deftly merge contemporary and historical storylines to produce a tale rooted in two different centuries and bound together to produce a superb intellectual thriller that is guaranteed to engage even the most discriminating reader.

I've tried several times to read this book, but I find it so boring I just can't. The style of storytelling is very wordy and dull and it is also hard to follow. Havn't ditched it yet, but I'm sure that's where it will end up- the ole ditch bag.

This book follows an increasingly common format of combining a story in the present with one in the past. It involves current day folks trying to solve a mystery from the past. It can be a quite entertaining story and this is one of the good ones. First of all, it involves Sir Walter Raleigh (now spelled Ralegh), Christopher Marlowe, William Shakespeare and the main character, Thomas Harriot. How can that company be anything but entertaining? I knew next to nothing about Harriot but was quite impressed with his field of study as I read the book. The present day hero, Harry Cavendish, a disgraced Elizabethian scholar, finds the mystery irrestible and finds a way to solve the puzzle. A read well woth your time.
