Can words kill?
Driving on a deserted road one night, college professor Paul Davis surprises a murderer disposing of bodies. He battles PTSD, depression, and problems at work. His wife, Charlotte, brings home a vintage typewriter to encourage him to start that novel he’s always intended to write.
But Paul swears the typewriter is possessed and types by itself at night. Only Paul can hear the noise coming from downstairs; Charlotte worries he’s going off the rails.
Paul believes that the typewriter is somehow connected to the murderer, who is now in prison. Increasingly tormented, Paul reinvestigates the deaths.
But maybe Paul should take the typewriter back to where his wife found it. Maybe he should stop asking questions and walk away while he can.
“Some days, all you really want is for someone to tell you a wicked-good story. Linwood Barclay answers the reader’s perpetual prayer.”—The New York Times Book Review
